Meal Kit MRE’s Review

About a week ago I went on the hunt for some MRE’s and I did this for two reasons. One was because I wanted to be more prepared, not just for the Zombie apocalypse, but also for storms and other disasters that may arise where food may be scarce. So I stumbled across the typical suspects: true military MRE’s, Wise brand, and others. But I landed on the Meal Kit MRE’s and decided to give them a shot and see how they turned out.

So in order to do a review I had to break down and try one of the MRE’s. There are a number of different meals in the kit but I settled on Meatballs In Marinara Sauce which comes with the following items:

  • Main Meal: Meatballs in Marinara Sauce Packet with ration heater
  • Desert: Chocolate Chip Cookie
  • Utensil: Spoon, Sugar, Coffee, Pepper, Fresh Nap(Hand Towel), Coffee Creamer
  • Drink: Fruit Punch

I had to dive in and try it so I broke out the ration heater and heated up the entree portion. The directions are written on the package and very simple to understand, considering it’s an MRE they should be simple. The meal itself is actually pretty good for something that has a lifetime of 48 months.

Thoughts:

  • Main Meal: Meatballs in Marinara Sauce Packet with ration heater
    • Had to read the directions a few times to ensure I didn’t mess it up. Once I had a handle on how to work the ration heater all went well and I had no problems heating up the meal. The main meal was pretty much a can of Chef Boyardee in a bag as far as the taste goes. The portion was a good size and it wasn’t bad tasting for something that can be on a shelf for 48 months.
  • Desert: Chocolate Chip Cookie
    • The desert was a cookie. It’s pretty hard to mess up a cookie and they didn’t. The cookie was pretty good somewhat moist and had a decent taste, while I’m sure it’s not your grandmothers home-made cookie.
  • Utensil: Spoon, Sugar, Coffee, Pepper, Fresh Nap(Hand Towel), Coffee Creamer
    • It would have been nice to have a fork and knife just to have an extra with you, even if they are just plastic. But the spoon works and it comes with some handy other items for you such as pepper and coffee. I didn’t try the coffee, sorry coffee enthusiasts, or the fresh nap. I saved those items for my bug out bag!
  • Drink: Fruit Punch
    • The fruit punch is essentially Kool Aid and was very good as long as you enjoy/like Fruit Punch flavored Kool Aid. It does come with a bag which you mix up the drink in. You can also drink the fruit punch from the bag but to make it easier I mixed in the bag and poured in a cup to drink. The bag is not easy to drink the fruit punch from and that’s something you might want to think about if you get this kit for your bug out bag/setup.

I’m considering trying the other MRE entrees/meals in the future and if I do you know I’ll let you know how they turned out! If you have any other questions or comments please feel free to email me or add them to the comments section!
