Remington 870 Special Purpose Marine Magnum

The tried and true Remington 870 Shotgun is trusted for home protection, hunting, and law enforcement world-wide. Reviewing a Remington 870 is comparable to beating a road kill deer. But… we are going to do it anyway.

Shooting
The Remington 870 is a classic shotgun that has been put through the gambit and made it out alive. This is a standard issue shotgun for many Law Enforcement agencies and I’ve seen it shot hundreds of times without the least bit of cleaning and still have zero malfunctions. Shooting the Remington 870 is relatively smooth for a pump shotgun shooting 2 & 3/4 slug, buck, and bird shot.

Now make no mistake when you shoot this shotgun you will know it’s there. It’s a 12 Gauge pump that has some kick, manly because it’s made to be tough and doesn’t have lots of fancy recoil reduction features. This shotgun is made to be affordable so the same features you get from a Browning duck hunting shotgun are not going to be in the Remington 870 as far as recoil reduction and easy cleaning and take down.

Trigger Pull
The trigger pull is even and as smooth as you could possibly want and the 870 will shoot on target every time. The trigger pull on a shotgun is not considered as big of a deal as they are all relatively standard, correct me if I am wrong on this.

Build
The classic design of the 870 makes it easy to use and learn for anyone who has had basic interaction with a shotgun. Even if you’re just starting to learn firearms the 870 is a pretty easy firearm to pickup and learn quickly. The layout of the trigger guard, safety, and slide release are all located in the same area making it quick and easy to get to the important parts of the shotgun. The one downside of the slide release being located in front of the trigger guard is that it makes it rather cumbersome to press it in a hurry. If it were located behind the trigger guard near the buttstock that would be easier to get to, in my opinion.

Summary
Overall, as stated in the introduction, this gun is not new to the gun world and almost everyone knows about the Remington 870 and most have, had, or are getting an 870 at some point in their life. If you’re looking for a reliable protection shotgun look no further, or if do check out the Mossberg 500 Tactical if you are looking at something other than the Remington 870.
