The process of selecting a new pistol for the XM17 Army Pistol has been in the works since 2013. This process has been a long and drawn out one, with the final selection being the Sig Sauer P320.

Sig Sauer beat out FN America, Glock, Smith and Wesson, and Beretta in the bidding war for the Modular Handgun System program. The caliber of the handgun has yet to be commented on by Sig or the Army. Many are speculating they will stick with the 9mm, as they already have plenty of the ammo stocked, but during the trials one piece of the modular design had to be interchangeable cailbers.

Sig Sauer states the P320 model is modular with interchangeable grips, multiple sizes, and calibers that can be converted between 9mm, .357SIG and .40SW. We have reviewed the P320 Compact last year comparing to a Glock 19 Gen 4. The P320 is being held as a great shooter in the pistol competition sports and 3-Gun.

Stay tuned to which caliber they choose and when they’ll start integrating them into actual field use.
