Sig Sauer P220 Carry: Best EDC in 45ACP?

The Sig Sauer P220 has been out on the market since the mid 1970’s. So it was only a matter of time that officers who carried the Full-Size as their sidearm would want something smaller, but as a back-up. So the P220 Carry was born! The Sig Sauer P220 Carry became the staple for law enforcement back-ups and marketed for a concealed carry option chambered in .45acp. With the overall length of 7.7”, overall height of 5.5”, and overall width of 1.5”, it is actually the same measurements as the P229. This particular model comes with two 8rd single stack magazines, so carrying IWB is real comfortable and is another option other than a range officer 1911.

The Steel Slide with anodized aluminum frame is coated in Sig’s Nitron finish for long lasting protection. Like most other Sigs, the unloaded weight is coming in at 30.4oz or 1.9lbs. This particular model is the Carry Elite Dark which comes with the Short Reset Trigger. According to Sig, their “engineers designed the SRT to provide you the same great safety and smooth action of the SIG DA/SA with a comfortable reset that is 60% shorter for faster trigger return and surgical control during high speed shooting.” Factory DA/SA trigger pull is coming in at 10lb and 4.4lbs.

The Carry Elite Dark offers standard 1913 picatinny rails, front cocking serrations, SIGLITE Adjustable Combat Night Sights, custom Hogue aluminum grips, ergonomic beaver-tail grip, and  front strap checkering. Like most 45acp pistols, it does have some kick, but even though this pistols barrel is coming in at 3.9”, it is very manageable.

Holsters are readily available out on the market right now by Safariland, Blackhawk, Fobus, DeSantis, Galco, as well as Custom Kydex Holsters. So if you are wanting to carry IWB or OWB, it’s quite easy to find. Carrying IWB or even on the ankle it’s actually comfortable.

All in all, the P220 Carry Elite Dark is an absolute dream to shoot. Unfortunately, the Carry Elite Dark is not being sold from Sig. I found this one used at my Local Gun Shop for around $800. When this gun was new, it was selling for around $1100 locally. It is very pricey, even with the used price tag, but like all Sigs, it is made with quality in mind. If you want a Sig Sauer P220 Carry Elite, Sig does sell a Stainless Model with the MSRP coming in at $1350, and selling locally for around $1200. But if you want just a carry model, there are quite a lot of options: Nitron, SAS, and Combat Threaded-Barrel. For all you Military/LEO/and First Responders, the Sig P220 Carry Nitron is being offered on their LEO Discount for $799, which includes 3 8rd magazines, Sig’s Night Sites, and comes with the E2 Grips. If you are in the market for a new conceal carry piece chambered in .45acp, then check out the Sig P220 Carry, you won’t be disappointed. Thank you to Clayton Guns for allow us to test out this pistol!

As always, ya’ll be good and be safe!
