There’s not much I praise President Obama for, but there is one thing he has done a good job of doing and that’s staying out of the gun issue. We all know what Obama’s stance on firearms as a whole but since becoming President, even as candidate Obama, he has stayed as far as possible away from the Gun issue.
With the slight exception of the gaff he made about people clinging to their religion and their guns during the 2008 campaign.
In an ABC News article published today they criticize Obama for his inaction after the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
But don’t worry! Paul Helmke from the wonderful, change making, Brady Campaign is here to call for action and change the world.
“We’re coming on the six-month mark since the shooting and still nothing from the administration,” said Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign. “It’s time for some action.”
I love the notion here that more government action is the answer. The best part of this the statement is lack of acknowledgment of the fact that a government failure is the reason Jared Lee Loughner was able to acquire a firearm in the first place. He was deemed “unqualified” for military service and was asked by administrators of a local community college to obtain mental health clearance. Why the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) didn’t have this information and why he wasn’t denied is beyond me.
Back to the point, President Obama isn’t going to take on the gun issue during an election year. Especially with his anti-gun views and America being such a pro-gun country.
